Hi Guys

Has anyone got any feedback they would be willing to share on 'Source Anywhere for VSS' (http://www.dynamsoft.com/Products/SAW_Overview.aspx) by Dynamsoft. I am thinking particularly of integration with various versions of VFP. I tend to have all of my projects using the IDE integration and am hoping that this will work with this product. I am currently working from home on an access 2007 project and the VSS over VPN is killing me. It takes minutes just to check in/out a 1mb file! It seems that dynamsoft have an unbelievable offer on at the moment (https://www.dynamsoft.com/Secure/SAW_BuyIt.aspx) where they are doing a 2 user licence for $99 which will be perfect for my Access development. I am hoping though that it will also be of use in the VFP work.

In contrast there is quite a bit of feedback (http://fox.wikis.com/wc.dll Wiki~SourceOffSite~WIN_COM_API) on SourceOffsite by SourceGear and I was wondering if this might be the way to go for VFP development but it is quite a bit more expensive given the offer on Source Anywhere at the moment.

Any thoughts greatfully appreciated especially any 1st hand experience of using either of these products. If there is another product that I should be considering instead by all means please let me know.

Regards

Darren

You may try first:

Re: Remote SourceSafe

Thank you for your suggestion dni.

I already use UltraVNC for support work but I would rather work locally with a remote connection for VSS. I find VNC a bit laggy for development work and I like being able to develop without having to rely on my internet connection.

Anyone else

Are you locked into VSS or could you go with a different product entirely

Re: Remote SourceSafe

Be careful Craig these forums are moderated you know talk me off a MS product if likely to get you a bat up your nightdress.

I have a fair history of about a dozen projects in there but I am always open to suggestions. The main thing I have going for VSS is that I got it free with Visual Studio 6. I don't particularly relish trying to migrate to another product but I guess I could keep VSS for history only. What do you use/suggest

Hi Darren,

I have found SourceOffSite a terrific add-on to VSS. It performs way better than the VSS native client, especially when connecting to a remote location. I cannot tell you how it works with VFP Project Manager integration, I only use the client. It is well worth the cost if you are connecting to the remote location, but I even use it for a local area network access to.

Well, Microsoft does have Team System with a different source code product than VSS.

If you want to stick with VSS, you should get the latest version that fixes a number of issues with 6.0. It has improved remote access capabilities.

There are a many other options. I use SourceGear Vault, which is free for one user, and has a tool to convert from VSS. Another good product that is open source is Subversion.

Hi Craig

Thanks for the advice.

I am currently in the process of setting up SourceOffsite to try it out. I know it's sad but I'm actually quite excited.

When you talk about getting the latest version of VSS do you mean a newer version of VSS 6 or are you talking about VSS2005 According to VSS explorer (Help-About) I have 6.0d (Build 31222). Is this the latest version of 6 or are you saying there is an update available

Think I will also have a look at Vault when I get a minute. Does it support VFP IDE integration Which versions

Darren, I must say SourceAnywhere is much faster than SourceOffSite. You can compare them by yourself. Smile

Thanks,

Re: Remote SourceSafe

I have downloaded the demonstration version of SourceAnywhere and installed it for evaluation on my system.

However I have encountered the following difficulties
Visual Foxpro 6 and Visual Foxpro8 do not appear to list the VSSAnywhere source control provider.
Visual Foxpro 9 appears to work reasonably well but the Project list does not get updated when new files get added to the project!
